Alderwoman/Commissioner Gloria Taylor's dream was to see her community move in a positive direction. She wanted economic growth for her town, and she wanted to see more youth stay in school and receive the education needed to excel in today's society. She knew that something we all have in common is being able to look back over our lives and remember someone who has helped us reach our goals. Whether it was a word of encouragement or financial support, we all rely on each other to succeed.

The Gloria J. Taylor Foundation is based on being that support that helps builds dreams. We believe in the preservation of dignity and self-worth of every individual. We intend to promote the development of a productive and positive self-image by assisting each individual to achieve his or her highest level of productivity.

The Gloria J. Taylor Foundation is dedicated to providing comprehensive, competent, and caring services. We intend to support the continuing need for educational support and self-awareness. Our ultimate goal is the preservation of life, family, and community unity within our inner city.

WHY WE EXIST

Taylor wanted Harvey residents to take pride in their community. Because of the aspirations of the late Gloria J. Taylor, in 1997, her children decided to start The GLORIA J. TAYLOR FOUNDATION. 

Some of Taylor's Accomplishments:

  • First female elected to a city-wide office in 1977
  • First African American elected in the City of Harvey in 1977
  • Sponsored 3rd Ward back to school party 1991-1995
  • Chaired the Harvey Economic Development committee 1991-1995
  • Coordinated, Grant-A-Wish Program, City of Harvey Il. [Helping less fortunate terminally ill children.] 1992-1995
  • Presented Woman of the Year Award by SSC in 1992.

We Believe That

If you cannot be a shining example, you may be a horrible warning. Many of our communities have been plagued with economic deprivation and educational failure. We seek to respond to the deepest needs of our neighbors. We choose to celebrate our triumphs and adhere to the demands of developing people. Utilizing the voices of our children and the wisdom of our past, we challenge our history and embrace the spirit of a bright future. We have elected children as our most precious commodity. The goal for community pride and educational success is placed in the laps of our future, our children.

Currently, we must provide our children with an environment that breeds positive goals and develops a determined spirit that lives beyond a dream. Through collective efforts, we will challenge every life with the responsibility of building safe and positive communities.

The wounds of our past give us wisdom for healing our future. The time is now! Utilizing the tools of free expression, scholarships, economic support, educational leadership, love, political responsibility, and faith, we assist our future.
